Groove Frequencies

Groove Frequencies is the smooth jazz project of bassist and keyboardist John Stewart, who composes and produces all of its music. Stewart turned to recording after a 21-year military career, pursuing an ambition he had held since his teens, with the aim of making smooth jazz built on a solid groove. The first album, In the Groove, came out on B2j Music in 2017.

A self-titled follow-up arrived in 2018 with “Breathless”, “A Gentle Rain”, “Stompin’ at the Groove Shack” and “Imagine This”, which the project counts as its first Billboard-charting single; saxophonist Gerald Albright and guitarist Blake Aaron guest on that record. Back to the Groove (2019) and Grooves To Go (2021) came next, the latter leaning on saxophonist Jimmy Reid, who plays on “Kinetic” and several other tracks. Night Grooves appeared in 2024, and a sixth album, SIX, in January 2026. Stewart’s recordings bring in musicians he got to know while travelling with the military.
